Ernie & Bert, in the closet?

In our group last night we talked about the chapter and I mentioned the part about parents who won't let their little kids watch Sesame Street because Ernie and Bert live together. I found this funny in one way, but sad in another. First of all, I was a serious watcher of the show as a child and let my own kids watch it. The sexuality of these puppets never entered my mind. Just wondering what everyone else thought of this. It also reminded me of what Professor said about the student who played a murderer in a school play but then his parents didn't want him to play a gay character in another. I wonder if parents who won't let kids watch Sesame Street allow them to watch shows where people are committing crimes or behaving in other unethical ways (pick any soap opera or most sit coms).

My husband had a student graduate and receive a drama scholarship at a prestigious university. He was given the lead but it was a gay man and he had to make out with guys. I mean is that necessary? Choose homosexuality or lose the lead.

I think your absolutely right. After class on Wednesday this was definitely something that really stayed with me. Mainly about the student who played Macbeth and then couldn't play a gay character. I am assuming that things like this happen all the time. I just hope we are the generation willing to step up and call people out on these discrepancies and hopefully make a change in the way we treat people.

I think it's the parents that get these sick thoughts in their head and think that shows like Sesame Street are bad for our kids to watch. When I believe those thoughts never cross a childs mind. Some parents are hypocrites they try so hard to protect their kids from exposure to homosexuality. I think there is more danger in the video games these days. My 14 year old neighbor plays video game alot. All he ever talks about are the shooting and killing he does in these games.
