FCC policy & the first amendment

In today's news... a good topic for discussion for our class. Should the FCC be able to fine tv companies who broadcast expletives? The FCC currently has a policy that says they can but others are appealing it as a violation of first amendment rights. One good argument is that parents have many ways to monitor what their kids are able to watch through parental controls so it's up to them to decide what words they want them to hear (or not). What do you think? Should the celebs be able to use "the F word" or other "fleeting expletives" at awards ceremonies if we assume only adults are watching? In my opinion, I don't think it's really necessary for them to swear but should someone be punished if they do?

I don't think it would be right for them to be punished for swearing. As a parent I believe it is your obligation to teach your children right from wrong and to closely monitor what programs they are watching. What is funny to me is that, kids are going to hear bad words one way or another, it is the parents responsibility to teach them that those words are not appropriate.

I agree with you that swearing isn't really needed, and also that it should not be the companies that get charged.... only if they had a swear jar for the rich and famous right!? :-)

I have to agree with both sides of your arguement. There is saying I always believed that when people curse they have a low vocabulary meaning they don't know how to express themselves without cursing. Although, they should be allowed to curse if they want to. I believe it is also up to the parents to teach their children like hippiegurl said. We as a society depend so heavily on someone or something to be the parent for children for examples instead of the actual parent. The celebrities are not raising our children, we are, therefore it is our responsibility, NOT the celebrities. Just a few thoughts...lol.
